Q9 - Suggestions for Data Storytelling
Q9 - What are the main suggestions for developing data storytelling?
Answer to the question:
Some suggestions for developing data narratives are:
1. Verify the facts
2. Focus on key statistical points
3. Present data in visual formats
4. Present insights in a perceptive way
5. Make the data relatable to people
Let’s describe them.
1. Verify the facts
This is the initial preparation that takes time.
Before you start designing the story, check if the facts of the story are based on reality and if they are correct.
Check if the data is accurate and if the statistics or conclusion generated will not create false narratives.
2. Focus on key statistical points
The second suggestion is to focus on the key points offered by statistics, the information that can be interesting or intriguing to people.
When preparing your data story, you should be looking for these points as they draw attention and become the focal point of the story.
3. Present data in visual formats
The third suggestion is to present the data in a graphical and visual way that becomes simple to understand.
It is easier to tell a data story using Dashboards or infographics than to try to write long texts to be read.
4. Present insights in a perceptive way
The fourth suggestion for telling stories is to make the presentation of the data insightful.
You should provide information in a way that makes the vision obvious to the interlocutor.
Don't let them guess, tell directly and perceptively what the data is trying to say.
Shock the interlocutors with your discovery, drawing their attention to your data story.
5. Make the data relatable to people
Use a representative person or character when telling the story.
Facts and numbers have more impact when they are presented from the example of a person than simply presenting numbers on a subject.
As we did earlier with Felipa who was worried about losing her house due to mortgage increases.
